Girls also performed the "mogi," a ceremony to change their clothes and hairstyle to those of adults, when they were 12 to 16 years old. In the old days, coming of age was earlier than today. It was only after World War II that the coming-of-age ceremony began to be held at the same age of 20 as today. In 1949, January 15 was established as "Coming of Age Day," and later, with the revision of the National Holidays Law in 2000, it became the second Monday of January. Men and women who will turn 20 years old during the year participate in the Coming of Age Ceremony, wearing hakama, suits or furisode (long-sleeved kimono). Women often enjoy changing outfits, for example, wearing furisode for the coming-of-age ceremony and a dress for the second dress at the pre-shoot.
