When to take newborn photos? Time, safety, and packing tips

Newborn photography is the photography of the little limbs and faces of a newborn baby, their sleeping expressions, and their time spent with their families.Instead of rushing into things based on just the number of days after birth, check the baby's and mother's health, the desired photos, and the timing of the photoshoot, and choose a day that's convenient.

What is Newborn Photography?

This is a commemorative photo that captures the moment when the baby was just born. Not only the sleeping face wrapped in a cloth, but also the movements of the hands and feet, the crying face, and the moment of being held by family members are all important records. It is important to respect the baby’s condition on that day rather than perfecting a specific pose.

When to take newborn photos?

The timing and details of photo shoots vary depending on the studio and plan. If you have specific ideas for the shoot, it’s best to discuss them before the birth and adjust the date to take into account the baby’s and mother’s health after the birth.

If you are not feeling well on the scheduled day, do not try to make up for it for the sake of the photos; please discuss rescheduling or other shooting options. If you have any health concerns such as premature labor, pre-existing conditions, jaundice, fever, or breastfeeding, do not make your own decision about the shooting date and please consult a doctor or midwife.

Are you pregnant during the booking process? Or after the birth?

During pregnancy, you can discuss the desired atmosphere, the location for the photoshoot, whether there are family photos, and how to contact you after the birth. After the birth, you will confirm the baby’s and mother’s condition, the travel time, and the available shooting times to decide on a date.

Since the expected date of delivery may vary, please make sure to check in advance the conditions for changing the reservation, how to handle a medical condition, and the age range for which you can take the photos.

Things to check for baby safety

  • Do not rigidly fix the position of the baby; adjust the position according to the baby's needs
  • How to support the head and body, and who will be watching during filming
  • Hygiene management of the cloth, accessories, costumes, and shooting space used
  • Response to room temperature, breaks, breastfeeding, and diaper changes
  • Can it be postponed if the baby or a family member becomes unwell?
  • Alternatives for when the pose you want to perform is difficult

Newborn Photography prioritizes the health and safety of the baby over the final look of the photos. Before booking, please check the specific arrangements and feel free to let us know any concerns you may have.

What should I bring on the day of the event?

  • Diapers, wipes, and clothes
  • What you need for breastfeeding, gauze and towels
  • Swaddles and blankets that you use regularly
  • Toys that make it easy for babies to settle down
  • Items of memory I want to photograph together
  • Clothing for family photos

Please check in advance which costumes and accessories are available at the studio, and which items you can bring in. Large items, fragile items, and items that come into contact with the skin are easier to discuss if you provide photos and sizes at the time of booking.

When a baby cries, doesn't sleep, or needs to be breastfed?

It's natural for babies to cry or not sleep, or to need to breastfeed or change their diapers mid-session. Discuss having a break and switching to a photo that reflects the day's events. You can't always get every pose you want captured.

Newborn Photography Case from Studio ReiMei

This is a shooting example handled by photographer Sugano. Not only the sleeping pose, but also the moment when the family members raise their hands, became a photo that led to the smiles of the family.
