Graduation Hakama Shooting

The onna hakama was invented as a school uniform for female students during the Meiji era (1868-1912). It originated from the uniform worn by women who served the court during the Heian period (794-1185). As a garment worn to study, the hakama was widely accepted by the general public because it was easier to move around in than a kimono, while still maintaining a sense of elegance. At a time when it was difficult for women to enter higher education, female students in hakama and female teachers who also wore hakama were the object of admiration for many women. In addition, female students of the time were what we now call fashion leaders.
