It was not until the Meiji Era (1868-1912) that students started elementary school in April. When Western education was first introduced, students entered school in September, the same as in the West. However, it was later changed to April in accordance with the government's fiscal year. Although April enrollment started for administrative reasons, it coincided with the blooming of cherry blossoms and the budding of plants, and because it suited the Japanese sensibilities, the trend of March graduation and April enrollment became firmly established.
