The Seven-Five-Three Festival is a celebration of the growth of children aged 3, 5, and 7 years old. You can celebrate regardless of the year of the year or age, and by having the photoshoot and prayer ceremony on separate days, it makes it easier for your child.
In this article, we will explain the difference between the age at which a child is allowed to get a hanami kimono, the number of years they have completed their age, and the timing of the photoshoot and shrine visit from the perspective of the photo studio staff.
What is the Seven-Five-Three Festival?
The Seven-Five-Three is a traditional Japanese celebration that celebrates the growth and health of children aged 3, 5, and 7. Every year, around November 15, children wear traditional kimono and visit a shrine with their families to pray for a safe growth and happiness in the future. This custom began among the nobility during the Heian period and spread to the common people during the Edo period.
At what age should you do the Seven-Five-Three ceremony?
Generally, girls celebrate at 3 years old and 7 years old, and boys at 5 years old. Depending on the region and family, boys as young as 3 years old are also celebrated.

This tradition originates from the "Obi-cutting Ceremony," a celebration of a milestone in a child's growth, when they move from a child's obi to an adult obi. 
5 years oldThe boy wearing a hakama in a seven-five ceremony symbolizes growth and a step towards being a man, and is to celebrate the beginning of social responsibility. Which do you celebrate by counting the years and your actual age?
The counting method is to add one year to the year of birth, and then add one year for each new year. The actual age is added one year for each birthday. Nowadays, many families celebrate the actual age, and you can choose either one that suits your child’s growth and your family’s plans.
Should the photoshoot and shrine visit be done around November 15th?
Autumn is the peak season for seven-five-three ceremonies, and both the studios and shrines get crowded. Wearing kimono that you don’t usually wear can be a burden for your child. At Studio Reimei, we recommend taking pre-photos from spring to summer, and only going to the shrine in autumn. Dividing the photo and shrine days makes it easier to have both days with plenty of time.
